That is the Question!</title><summary type='text'>The late Wilfred Cantwell Smith suggested that to talk about someone as a Buddhist, rather than as Buddhist misconstrues what faith is about. It flunks English grammar as well. Christian is not a noun (i.e. a Christian), but an adjective (i.e. a Christian person). In that context, I could perhaps be both Buddhist and Christian. Now don’t misunderstand me as saying that scripture references are unimportant. I am just a little bit wary because I’ve seen too many conversations degenerate into a process of one-upmanship where one person (or caucus) tries to pile up more references than the other, thus mistakenly believing that the bigger pile proves their point of view. Recently, I made visit to a local Hindu temple and had the chance to participate in another's "puja." Such encounters are alway enlightening. (he-he!)
